            The Mer de Glace, or "Sea of Ice," is one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the French Alps and a must-see for any visitor to Chamonix. Stretching over 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long and up to 200 meters deep, it’s the largest glacier in France and a powerful reminder of nature’s beauty and force.

            Your journey begins with a ride on the historic Montenvers cogwheel train, which winds its way up the mountain from Chamonix through pine forests and rocky landscapes. After about 20 minutes, you’ll arrive at the Montenvers station (1,913 m), where stunning panoramic views of the Mer de Glace and surrounding peaks, like Les Drus and Les Grandes Jorasses, await you.

            At the top, visitors can explore viewing platforms, learn about glacial geology at the Glaciorium museum, or descend via a gondola and stairs to visit the ice cave, a tunnel carved directly into the glacier itself—offering a surreal, glowing-blue world of ice.
